More than 500 people celebrated the achievements of University of New Orleans graduates in November during the Distinguished Alumni Gala held at The National WWII Museum.

The College of Business Administration honored Entergy Louisiana President and CEO Phillip May, who earned his MBA from UNO in 1992.

Former insurance executive William Chauvin was honored as the 2018 Homer Hitt Distinguished Alumnus of the Year; and Son of a Saint founder and executive director Bivian "Sonny" Lee was honored as the 2018 Homer Hitt Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year.

Also during the event:

  • The College of Sciences honored Lute Maleki as its 2018 Distinguished Alumnus.
  • The College of Engineering honored Jules Schneider.
  • The College of Liberal Arts, Education and Human Development honored Angie Gates, who earned a bachelor's degree in communications and a master's degree in arts administration from UNO.
  • Interdisciplinary studies honored Maj. Gen. Chad Franks, who graduated from UNO in 1990. Franks is the deputy commander, Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, U.S. Central Command.

The University of New Orleans is the only public research university in New Orleans. Of its more than 70,000 alumni around the globe, more than 45,000 live in metro New Orleans. The university is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.
