Indian Point Unit 3 Manually Shut Down

Buchanan -- Control room operators manually and safely shut down Indian Point unit 3 today upon observing fluctuating water levels inside a steam generator. Operators determined that one of the unit's condensate pumps, which is part of the system that feeds water into the plant's steam generators, automatically shut down while the unit was operating at full power causing water levels inside the steam generator to fluctuate.

Condensate pumps are located on the non-nuclear side of the plant.

All equipment responded as designed and the plant is currently safely shut down.

Unit 2 continues operating at full power and has been online for 477 continuous days.

Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity and supply about 25 percent of power used annually by homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
