Hema is from New Delhi, India and shares what AAPI means to her.

What does AAPI mean to you?
Like our Asian counterparts, South Asians seek to embrace and redefine what it means to be American, as immigrants and descendants of immigrants. We are rebuilding and creating a new brand for ourselves. We are embracing the American culture and making it our own. The gift of a new beginning in the land of opportunities is what AAPI month means to me.

How do you celebrate AAPI heritage month?
I celebrate all year by enjoying Asian food, clothing, music, movies, and good books! I love to spread cultural awareness to others by having meaningful conversations around the AAPI community.

What are you most proud about when it comes to being an Asian American?
The Asian Americans that came here before us. They helped create legal pathways to naturalization, better labor rights, and overall set new standards for our community. I am so proud of us!

Do you have a favorite tradition/holiday/food centered around AAPI heritage? If so, tell us about it.
Yes, Diwali. It is the festival of lights and the celebration of good over evil.
