Buchanan – Indian Point's Unit 3 nuclear power plant returned to service this afternoon, generating electricity less than 24 hours after the unit safely and automatically shut down following the failure of an electrical switch, or breaker, in a switchyard external to the plant. The switchyard is located across the street from Indian Point and receives electricity generated by the plant before distributing it out to the electrical grid.

The failure of the breaker resulted in Indian Point Unit 3's main electrical generator appropriately shutting down as a protective measure.

All equipment operated as designed during the shutdown and plant operations personnel performed as expected. There was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the safety of workers or the public.

Unit 2 continues operating at full power and has been online for 455 continuous days.

Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, N.Y., is home to two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate approximately 2000 megawatts of electricity for homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
